So, let’s fill up the gas tank, grab some snacks, and get ready to explore the Deep South.

Get Going – Atlanta, Georgia

Before we hit the open road, let’s explore Atlanta.

Start your day off with a hearty breakfast at the Silver Skillet, where you’ll feel like you’re stepping back in time.

After your meal, take a stroll through nearby Piedmont Park, the largest park in Atlanta. Don’t forget your camera because you’ll find stunning views of the city skyline along the way.

Next, head to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, where you can learn about the civil rights leader’s legacy and see his childhood home.

If it’s time for lunch, stop by Busy Bee Cafe, a soul food spot that has been serving Atlanta since 1947. Order the fried chicken, collard greens, mac and cheese, and fried okra – you won’t be disappointed.

After about two hours on the road, we’ll arrive in Birmingham.

Be sure to visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute to gain a better understanding of the city’s role in the Civil Rights Movement.

While you’re in town, stop by Saw’s BBQ for some finger-lickin’ good pulled pork and banana pudding. This place was voted best in the entire state!

Third Stop: Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Just a short 45-minute drive from Birmingham is Tuscaloosa, home of the University of Alabama.

If you’re a college football fan, you won’t want to miss out on a tour of their renowned stadium.

Then, take a break and try some Tuscaloosa-style barbecue ribs at Dreamland.

Fourth Stop: New Orleans, Louisiana

It’s finally time to arrive in New Orleans!

Begin your exploration of the Big Easy by taking a stroll through the French Quarter. Check out the famous Bourbon Street with all the jazz music and nightlife, there’s no better spot.

Then, visit the renowned Cafe Du Monde, known for their delicious beignets and café au lait.

In the evening, hop on a steamboat for a cruise on the Mississippi River. And if you’re around in February or March, don’t miss out on Mardi Gras, where you’ll see elaborate floats and costumes, as well as enjoy some tasty king cake.

Seriously though, if you are planning this trip with a loose schedule, then make SURE you go during Mardi Gras to see New Orleans in all of its glory! You will not be disappointed.

Fifth Stop: Gulf Shores, Alabama

Before we head back to Atlanta, make a quick stop in Gulf Shores for some relaxing beach time.

Kick off your shoes, stretch out on the sand, and breathe in that saltwater air.

There is so much to do in Gulf shores, but you absolutely must try a seafood restaurant called The Hangout. There’s plenty of entertainment here for all of the family to enjoy before getting back to ATL.
